Children’s Aid Society’s Effective Parenting Instruction Course (EPIC) Program provides FREE parenting classes using the Systematic Training for Effective Parenting (STEP) curriculum to Jefferson and Shelby County parents. Three versions of the curriculum are offered: STEP for Early Childhood for parents with children ages 0-5 years old, STEP for parents with children ages 6-12 years old, and STEP for parents with children ages 13-18 years old. Classes are approximately 6 weeks and are held at the CAS Center for Youth and Families in Birmingham, 2141 14th Ave. S, Birmingham, AL 35205. The materials are available in English and Spanish.
Sessions address a range of important topics including:
- Understanding children and their behavior
- Encouragement and self-esteem
- Communicating with children
- Helping children learn to cooperate
- Effective discipline
Classes are designed to help strengthen each group member’s parenting by providing skills training to parents. The program encourages a democratic parenting style by providing children choices and fostering responsibility, improving communication between parent and child, and helping children learn through natural and logical consequences. The Early Childhood Curriculum includes the additional topics of Shaken Baby Prevention, Safe Sleep for Infants, and Smoking Cessation.
