FAQ for Staffers
1. Who are the CAMP APAC campers and where do they come from?
Camp APAC campers are adopted children, their siblings, and children waiting to be adopted. They range in ages of 9 to 18. The children come from all over Alabama. The camp is provided at no cost to families connected to DHR and at a nominal fee for other families.
2. Where are the Camp ASCCA facilities?
Camp ASCCA is on Lake Martin in Jackson’s Gap, AL approximately 90 miles southeast of Birmingham. The address is 5278 Camp ASCCA Drive, Jackson's Gap, AL 36861. Learn more about Camp ASCCA at http://www.campascca.org.
3. What training is provided to the camp staff?
There is a full orientation and training provided to all staff starting Monday, June 18 in the late afternoon and ending at lunch on Tuesday, June 19. Orientation includes overview of APAC, campsite tour, overview of roles, special needs discussion, tips and tricks, etc.
4. What are the different staff roles?
Staffers fall into three general categories: Cabin Sleepers, Group Leaders, and Bus Riders.
a. Group Leaders (3-4 per group)
* Supervise campers in their group from breakfast until group de-briefing (9 or 9:30pm).
* Coordinate Talent Show activity, designation of individual camper awards, camp cheers, nightly group debriefing, etc.
* Other duties based on camp needs.
b. Cabin Sleepers (2-3 per cabin)
* Supervise campers while in their cabins. This includes during morning/afternoon breaks and overnight.
* Wake up campers, assist with morning hygiene, and transition them to breakfast and into their groups.
* Settle campers down, assist with nightly hygiene, and get them into bed.
* Decorate cabins and post bed name tags and daily schedules.
* Deliver cabin’s dirty towels to laundry room before breakfast.
* Other duties based on camp needs.
c. Bus Riders (1-2 each needed from Mobile, Montgomery, Huntsville, Birmingham)
* Ride to camp on bus with campers.
* Check-in and check-out all bus riders and supervise campers to and from camp.
* Distribute snacks during bus ride.
* Deliver all intake forms to camp director/producer and medications to camp nurse (camp director/producer will deliver intake forms to nurse).
* Other duties based on camp needs.
4. Can I choose my group or role?
Groups and roles are assigned based on a staffer’s strengths and the groups’ needs. No guarantees regarding role assignment can be made, but we encourage staffers to indicate their preferences.
5. What is a typical day like?
Each day includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner. In-between meals – campers will participate in a variety of rotation activities (listed below) that last approximately 75 minutes each. All campers are in the pool each day (because they love it so!). We also provide a break to wash up or take the much needed nap. Each night brings a different special event including Pool Party, Movie Night, Scavenger Hunt, or Talent Show. We also have a special guest speaker on Wednesday to talk about issues important to adopted kids.
6. What should staff bring with them?
Each staffer should bring the basics: toiletry items, swim suit, shorts, jeans, pajamas, poncho, flip flops, sturdy shoes for various camp activities, beach towel, etc. Camp will provide all linens for staffers, however you may choose to bring your own. Camp APAC staff t-shirts will be provided to staffers to wear daily. A detailed packing list will be sent in the staffer acceptance packet.

8. What types of activities are available at camp?
There are more than 20 different activities including tubing, pontoon boating, swimming, flat water canoeing, water park, tree-climbing, zip-line, ropes course, rappelling, horseback ring riding, archery, arts and crafts, water slide, and a variety of sports.
9. When must staffers arrive for camp?
We are finalizing the schedule for staff orientation. Staffers will likely arrive in the late afternoon on Monday, June 17.
10. Are Camp APAC staffers paid?
Each summer, we have both volunteer and paid staff. In addition to room, board, training, an unforgettable week, and the chance to make a difference in the life of a child, Camp APAC provides a $300 stipend for qualifying staff. No travel reimbursement is paid.
11. What qualities and experience does Camp APAC look for in staffers?
The qualities we look for include, boundless enthusiasm, putting others before self, sensitivity to camper needs, willingness to work, dedication and loyalty. Prior experience in a camp setting is not a requirement for working as part of our team, however it is a bonus! Working with children in professional settings, teaching skills, and certifications are also assets to your application.
12. Are there any other requirements to be a staffer?
You must be 19 years old or older. If you are not yet 19, you may still apply if you will have completed two semesters of college by June 2013. Also, thorough background checks are completed on all applicants in compliance with State requirements.
