FAQ for Parents

1. Is my child eligible to attend Camp APAC?
Camp APAC is designed for adopted children and their siblings, ages 9-18, living in the same household in Alabama. A camper must be 9 years old as of June 19, 2012. Camp APAC seeks to serve all qualified children in Alabama. However, space and staff do limit the number we can serve. Other factors that may influence acceptance to Camp APAC include sex, age, county of residence, type of adoption, etc.

2. How many campers are accepted?
We have capacity for up to 144 campers.

3. What are the criteria for camper acceptance?
Camp APAC camper acceptance is prioritized by several factors. They include consideration of camp budget constraints and a balanced population; ratio of age, gender, county of residence, type of adoption (public/private) and racial diversity.

Camp APAC is designed for children with AND without special needs. Children with physical, mental or educational difficulties are encouraged to apply. However, consideration for acceptance is given when one-on-one special care or attention is not required.

4. How much does it cost to attend Camp APAC?
The regular fee to attend Camp APAC is $75 per camper. This fee is waived for any DHR-connected family. A "DHR-connected" family is defined as a family who
has ever been licensed to foster or adopt by the Alabama Department of Human Resources.

5. What activities are available at Camp APAC?
Activities include (but aren’t limited to) swimming, a waterslide, water skiing, tubing, an accessible water playground, canoeing, boating, fishing, arts and crafts, golf, miniature golf, nature appreciation, geocaching, horseback, bocce, riflery, and even high adventure activities such as climbing, the zip-line, and cargo net. In addition to all of this, there are evening programs that include campfires, dances, and talent shows.

Program areas include the demonstration farm, environmental center, adventure area, nature trail, ball field, horseback riding ring, golf driving range, rifle range, lakefront, modern filtered swimming pool, an all-weather pavilion, and much, much more!. All of this is on 230 beautiful wooded acres with 1.5 miles of Lake Martin shoreline.

6. Who are Camp APAC’s staff?
The majority of our 70+ staff are adults working in areas related to child and family services. This includes 30 staff who are employees or interns with Children's Aid Society. Non-CAS camp staff are selected after a competitive interview process, which includes reference and criminal background checks. There is an overall ratio of 1:2.

7. Are Camp APAC’s staff trained?
All staff participates in a thorough orientation training session prior to camp that is conducted by CAS social workers and veteran staff.

8. Does Camp APAC have a nurse on staff?
Yes, Camp ASCCA employs a full-time Director of Health Services who is a Registered Nurse.

9. Is Camp ASCCA American Camp Association (ACA) accredited?
Yes. ACA accredits over 2,400 camps. ACA-Accredited® camps meet up to 300 standards for health, safety, and program quality. Please visit www.acacamps.org for more information on the American Camp Association.

10. What should I pack for Camp APAC?
A "recommended packing list” will be sent with your information packet upon acceptance to Camp APAC . Basic items include clothing, swimsuit, toiletry items, raincoat/poncho, sunscreen, flashlight, laundry bag, camera, and any special equipment and medications used by your camper.

11. Do I need to send “spending money” to Camp APAC?
No. Campers are provided with snacks and drinks. Each camper also receives a Camp APAC bag and t-shirt.

12. Can campers call home or bring a cell phone?
The Camp ASCCA phone (256-825-9226) is a business phone. Campers are not allowed to use it or to receive calls. In case of emergency, parents or guardians will be notified by Camp APAC staff. Campers are allowed to bring cell phones, but they are stored for the duration of camp.

13. Can I send my child a card or letter at Camp APAC?
We hope you plan to write your camper - a letter or card from home is always a welcome sight. Campers will be encouraged to write home, and the staff will be happy to assist when needed. Give your camper writing materials, stamps and/or several stamped post cards, if you would like to receive a letter.

15. Can parents visit campers Camp APAC?
Parents, relatives, and friends of the campers are welcome to visit and tour the facility on arrival day (June 19) and departure day (June 22) only. There are designated times for parents to be on campus and those are included in the camper acceptance packet.

16. How do I volunteer to work at Camp APAC?
Please contact us at campapac@childrensaid.org if you are interested in working at Camp APAC. The staff application will be available online at the end of January. Parents of campers who are selected to also serve as staffers will not be placed in the same group or cabin as their child. Note: all staffers are required to arrive on Monday, June 18 for Orientation and campers are not allowed on campus until Tuesday afternoon, June 19.
